FSSAI Registration is the statutory food safety authorization governed by Section 31 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
Administered by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) through the FoSCoS portal (foscos.fssai.gov.in), registration is mandatory for food business operators (FBOs), small manufacturers, retail outlets, cloud kitchens, and caterers whose annual turnover does not exceed ₹1.5 Crore under the revised thresholds implemented from 1 April 2026 (State Licence: ₹1.5 Crore to ₹50 Crore; Central Licence: above ₹50 Crore).
Perpetual Validity vs. Continuing Fee Obligations: Under current FSSAI regulations effective in 2026, licences and registrations have perpetual validity unless suspended, cancelled, or surrendered by the food authority—meaning no periodic renewal applications are required merely to extend the certificate's validity. However, perpetual validity does not mean food licensing is fee-free. The official FSSAI framework clarifies that FBOs may pay statutory fees for any number of years at once, and fees can be paid during the year. Applicable government statutory fees vary by registration or licence category and food-business type, and are remitted directly on FoSCoS. Operating a food business without valid FSSAI authorization attracts penalties up to ₹5 Lakhs and prosecution under Section 63.
